About me
Dentist, orthodontist and advocate for the use of light in healthcare
I'm Dr Nicola Vilaplana. I use Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) every day at Clínica Dental del Rey in Madrid, and I lead the Marisol Light Project to make this therapy accessible, with scientific rigour, to anyone who may benefit from it — wherever they are.
An uncommon combination
My practice is not based on a single discipline, but on the combination of three areas of expertise that are rarely found together.
Clinical training and certification
Dentist, orthodontist, and certified by SELO in the therapeutic use of lasers and phototherapy in dentistry.
Membership of scientific societies
Member of SELO (Spanish Society for Laser and Phototherapy in Dentistry) and WALT (World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy).
Educational commitment in two languages
Committed to providing clear, evidence-based information in both Spanish and English.
My experience and professional approach
I'm Dr Nicola Vilaplana, a Scottish dentist. I graduated in Dentistry (BDS) from the University of Glasgow, completed an Official Master's Degree in Advanced Orthodontics at the European University of Madrid, and have been practising in Madrid since 2005, where I am registered with the Official College of Dentists and Stomatologists of the First Region (COEM) (Registration No. 28008099).
I hold SELO certification in the therapeutic use of lasers and phototherapy in dentistry, including Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT). I currently use this technology every day in clinical practice at Clínica Dental del Rey, where we use it to help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and support the recovery and health of oral tissues.
Although my main field is dentistry, photobiomodulation has much broader applications across medicine and healthcare. That is why I dedicate part of my work to explaining it beyond the dental chair through the Marisol Light Project.
-
Individualised treatment
Every PBMT treatment protocol is tailored to the individual, with the wavelength, dose and treatment frequency selected according to the therapeutic goal. -
Evidence before promises
I make a clear distinction between what is supported by robust scientific evidence and what is still under investigation. -
Daily clinical practice
PBMT is not an occasional addition to treatment. It is a routine part of the care we provide at Clínica Dental del Rey.
A personal story behind the light
My interest in photobiomodulation began with a deeply personal experience. As a dentist, I experienced the frustration of being unable to help my friend Marisol, who was suffering from painful mouth ulcers caused by her medication.
Seeing her suffer and feeling powerless to find an effective solution led me to look beyond conventional treatments in search of other options.
Following Marisol's death, I discovered Photomedicine and, in particular, Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT). What began as a personal search gradually became a fundamental part of both my clinical practice and my professional development.
The Marisol Light Project grew directly from that experience: from a desire to help others find clear, accurate and evidence-based information about a therapy that remains relatively unknown to many patients and healthcare professionals.
My goal is simple: to help you understand how this therapy works and guide you towards safe, evidence-based treatments that support the body's natural ability to heal.
We provide clear, science-based information about Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT), so that everyone can understand how it works before deciding whether it is right for them.
Clarity
We explain PBMT in clear, straightforward language, without unnecessary technical jargon or empty promises.
We distinguish between what is supported by scientific evidence and what is still under investigation.
We support each person throughout their healing journey.
