Welcome to the Marisol Light Project blog!<\/h2>\n

I'm Dr Nicola Vilaplana, a dentist with training in\nPhotobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT)<\/h3>\n

Although my main field is orthodontics,\nphotobiomodulation and other therapeutic applications\nof light have a much broader range of applications in\nmedicine and dentistry. Through the Marisol Light\nProject, I dedicate part of my work to explaining this\ntechnology beyond the dental chair, bringing the\nscience of light closer to patients and healthcare\nprofessionals.<\/p>\n

Today, I would like to share with you one of the\nmost interesting applications I have discovered in\nthe field of oral health: the use of light as an adjunct\nin the management of periodontal disease,\nspecifically through a device called Lumoral.<\/p>\n

The Silent Challenge: What Is Periodontal Disease?<\/h2>\n

When we think about oral health, we usually think about tooth decay or having straight\nteeth. However, there is another essential part of our mouths that deserves far more\nattention: our gums and the tissues that support our teeth.<\/p>\n

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition associated with the build-up of bacteria\norganised into a structure known as dental biofilm. If it is not properly controlled, it can\nprogress from early signs, such as bleeding when brushing, to the gradual loss of the bone\nthat supports the teeth.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest challenges is that, in its early stages, periodontal disease can progress\nsilently and without pain. This is why regular dental check-ups are so important.<\/p>\n

In the clinic, every day we see how important it is to maintain good periodontal health. It is\nnot simply about having a beautiful smile but about ensuring that the tissues surrounding\nthe teeth remain healthy, so that the teeth can remain strong throughout life.<\/p>\n

Can Light Help Our Gums? Introducing Lumoral<\/h2>\n

Research into light-based technologies is opening up new possibilities in dentistry. Just as\ncertain forms of light are used to support tissue healing, relieve discomfort and complement\na range of dental treatments, technologies have also been developed to target the oral\nbacterial ecosystem.<\/p>\n

Lumoral is an intraoral device that combines antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT)\nwith Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT). This technology uses a photosensitive\nsubstance together with two specific wavelengths of light to produce a localised effect\nagainst microorganisms associated with periodontal disease while, at the same time,\nsupporting the body's natural tissue repair processes.<\/p>\n

The Treatment Process in Three Steps:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Preparation with a photosensitiser:<\/strong> A special solution called a\nphotosensitiser is applied inside the mouth. It binds preferentially to certain\nmicroorganisms associated with periodontal disease.<\/li>\n
  2. Light activation:<\/strong> The patient uses the Lumoral device, which emits two\nspecific wavelengths of light for 10 minutes.<\/li>\n
  3. Localised antimicrobial action and photobiomodulation:<\/strong> Lumoral uses two\nwavelengths of light that work in a complementary way. The 405 nm\nwavelength has a direct antibacterial effect on plaque bacteria, while the 810\nnm wavelength activates the photosensitiser bound to the plaque, producing\nthe antimicrobial effect. In addition, this same wavelength exerts a\nphotobiomodulation (PBMT) effect on the gingival tissues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You can think of it as a targeted treatment. The photosensitiser accumulates\npreferentially in the dental plaque and, when activated by light, acts primarily on the\nmicroorganisms associated with periodontal disease rather than indiscriminately\neliminating all the bacteria in the mouth. Many of the bacteria naturally present in\nthe oral cavity form part of a healthy ecosystem and play an important role in\nmaintaining oral health.<\/p>\n

    What Does the Science Tell Us? The Evidence Behind\nLumoral<\/h2>\n

    As a healthcare professional, my primary interest is always the available scientific\nevidence. Clinical studies evaluating Lumoral have shown promising results when it\nis used as an adjunct to conventional periodontal treatment.<\/p>\n

    Among the observed outcomes are:<\/h3>\n

    Reduction of Bacteria Associated with Periodontal Disease<\/h4>\n

    Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) has been shown to\nreduce microorganisms associated with periodontitis, including\nspecies considered to play an important role in the progression of\nthe disease, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis.<\/p>\n

    Improvements in Clinical Periodontal Parameters<\/h4>\n

    Clinical studies evaluating Lumoral as an adjunct to\nconventional periodontal treatment have reported\nimprovements in parameters including:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Bleeding on probing.<\/li>\n
    • Gingival inflammation.<\/li>\n
    • Dental plaque indices.<\/li>\n
    • Certain parameters related to periodontal pocket depth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      A Complementary Tool in Periodontal Care<\/h3>\n

      Current evidence supports the use of Lumoral as an additional\ntool within a comprehensive approach to periodontal health,\nalongside good oral hygiene, professional maintenance and\nperiodontal treatment where necessary.<\/p>\n

      How Do We Use It in Clinical Practice? A Realistic Perspective<\/h2>\n

      It is important to clarify one fundamental point:<\/strong> Lumoral does not replace toothbrushing, interdental\ncleaning, routine dental check-ups or periodontal treatment recommended by a dental professional. It\nis considered a complementary, or adjunctive, tool that can be incorporated into an individualised\ntreatment plan.<\/p>\n

      In clinical practice, it may be particularly useful in situations such as:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Patients who, despite maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular check-ups, continue\nto have areas of persistent inflammation.<\/li>\n
      • As an adjunct following deep periodontal treatment to help control the bacterial biofilm.<\/li>\n
      • In patients who frequently develop tooth decay, as an adjunct to help control the bacterial biofilm.<\/li>\n
      • Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, where maintaining good oral hygiene can be more\nchallenging because of braces or other orthodontic appliances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        From my perspective as an orthodontist, this is particularly interesting because successful orthodontic\ntreatment depends not only on tooth movement, but also on maintaining healthy periodontal tissues\nthroughout treatment.<\/p>\n

        A Glimpse into the Future of Oral Health<\/h2>\n

        The development of technologies such as Lumoral reflects an important trend in modern medicine:\ntreatments that are becoming increasingly precise, selective and personalised.<\/p>\n

        The future of medicine is not simply about more intensive treatments, but about treatments that are\nable to act more specifically where they are needed. When used appropriately and based on sound\nscientific principles, light can become an additional tool to help maintain the body's natural balance.<\/p>\n

        This technology opens the door to a new era in oral healthcare, where we combine prevention,\nscience and personalised treatments to support our patients throughout their oral health journey.<\/p>\n
